TEFAF Maastricht 2020: Wallace Chan unveiled two of his new creations to the public.

World's renowned jewellery artist Wallace Chan has returned to TEFAF Maastricht for the fifth time this year with a presentation centred around the theme of time. The 25 jewellery creations handpicked by the artist as well as two of jewellery artist's new pieces were revealed to the public at Tefaf Maastricht.

One of these two works Wallace Chan has revealed was The Snowflake, a transformable brooch that can be worn in two different ways. The Snowflake brooch echos the notion that no two snowflakes are the same. Some of nature’s most exquisite designs, snowflakes seem to be each created and endowed with the same magnitude of creativity and individuality. In promising to remain unique, they defy their innate ephemerality and become eternal. Wallace Chan’s The Snowflake thus stands for uniqueness and transformation; it mirrors the snowflake’s eternal quality with the immortality of gemstones, conveys such uniqueness through the creation’s ability to rotate even when worn.

The second new work that visitors discovered at TEFAF Maastricht was Windows to the Universe, a necklace and ring demi-parure made from pink sapphires and green tourmalines on a pure canvas composed of diamonds, pearls and white agate. An exemplar of the artist’s revolutionary gemstone-setting technique, the gemstones together form a ring of windows on to a secret, alluring universe hidden within.

Addition to two new collection further highlights include two brooches titled Garden of Dreams and Mind Puzzle, which attempts to materialise the abstract forms of dream and the intricacies of the human mind. Garden of Dreams likens the development of the human mind to the cultivation of a flower, with six rubies representing the stamens of a lily.

Mind Puzzle, with its rich abundance of gemstones and geometric shapes, illustrates a chaotic yet orderly cluster of creativity, memories and experiences, accumulated throughout all stages of the artist’s life. Childhood, symbolised here by the figure of a baby in blue porcelain, forever dwells inside and shapes the mind of the adult.

Wallace Chan is a storyteller, a carrier of heritage, a reflection of the times and a way of realising his dreams. The jewellery is more than an ornament to Wallace Chan, the jewellery and gemstones are his languages, and through them, he translates the messages of our universe. Wallace Chan’s passion for art, nature, culture, philosophy, technology and change drives him to create one-of-a-kind pieces that define today’s spirit and transcend the boundaries of contemporary jewellery. Underlined in Wallace Chan’s creations is also his philosophical exploration of the universe – Cosmic Destiny, a brooch bearing the recurring motifs of a butterfly, a flower and a human figure, explores the oneness of all beings and the ever-changing, all-encompassing qualities of the universe.
