Alrosa Unveils Polished Gem from Russia’s Largest Colored Diamond

Alrosa, Russia’s leading diamond mining company, has revealed a remarkable polished diamond cut from the country’s largest known colored rough diamond. This significant unveiling marks another milestone in Alrosa’s legacy of producing exceptional gemstones.

Russian mining giant Alrosa recently revealed the “New Sun,” a radiant, 100-plus-carat, fancy vivid yellow diamond that now ranks as the largest polished colored diamond ever produced in Russia.

The standout polished stone was cut and finished in-house by Alrosa's expert craftsmen, showcasing the miner’s advanced capabilities in handling rare and colored diamonds. The original rough was notable not just for its size but also for its vibrant hue a rarity in Russian diamond production.

A team of 15 master cutters at Alrosa’s manufacturing complex worked on transforming the diamond from rough to polished, the miner noted.

Alrosa has manufactured the largest colored rough diamond in Russia’s history, with the polished coming in at over 100 carats. 

To debut the gem on the global stage, Alrosa partnered with renowned international auction house Christie’s, which has previously handled several of Alrosa’s high-profile diamonds. This collaboration underlines the miner’s growing presence and influence in the high-end colored diamond market.

By bringing this gem to the international market, Alrosa continues to highlight Russia’s potential in producing not just industrial diamonds but also some of the world’s most exquisite and unique stones.

The fancy-vivid-yellow polished stone, called the New Sun, has a rich honey-golden color, Alrosa said last week. It created the stone from a 236-carat rough, named Dawn, which the miner found in 2020 at its Ebelyakh deposit in Yakutia.
